If you’ve ever been to a Sudanese wedding, you’ve probably seen one — but what actually is a toub?
The Sudanese toub (توب) is a long piece of fabric traditionally worn by Sudanese women. It’s wrapped around the body and draped over the head and/ or shoulder, creating the distinctive look we all know and love.
Tiyab come in so many different fabrics, colours and designs. You’ll find everything from simple cotton and silk tiyab to prints, embroidery, glitter and shimmering lamé. Some are perfect for everyday wear, while others are saved for weddings and special occasions.
There’s also no single way a toub has to look. The fabrics and trends have changed across generations, and women have always found ways to style their tiyab differently.
For many of us in the diaspora, we grew up seeing our mums, aunties and grandmothers wearing them without necessarily learning how to wear one ourselves.
That’s what Toub 101 is here for — making the toub a little less intimidating and a lot easier to understand.
Because the toub is part of our culture, and it should feel like ours to wear too. 🇸🇩
