Someone recently commented on one of our TikToks asking what size the toub is — and it made us realise this is exactly the kind of thing we want to talk about more.
One of the ways we want to make the toub feel more accessible is by not assuming everyone already knows the basics. A lot of these things might feel completely obvious if you grew up wearing tiyab or watching the women around you wear them, but for younger generations — especially those of us in the diaspora — that knowledge isn’t always automatically passed down.
So, starting with the basics: the toub is one size.
Unlike normal clothing, tiyab don’t come in sizes like 8, 10, 12 or 14. A toub is one long piece of fabric that you wrap and adjust around your body.
Most Sudanese tiyab are around 4.5 metres long, although the width can vary depending on the fabric and style.
At Tiyab Mahanna, our tiyab measure 4.5m × 1.15m.
The 4.5m is the length of the fabric, giving you enough to wrap around the body and create the traditional drape over the shoulder and head.
The 1.15m is the width, which affects how much coverage the toub gives and how it feels when wrapped.
Because there’s no fixed waist, zip or fitted shape, you can adjust how much fabric you use around the body and how much you leave for the drape.
That’s why one toub can work for so many different women.
